Treatment for quality

Water extracted from coal seams as part of natural gas production can be safely managed and reused.

Depending on the quality of the water and how we will reuse it, produced water may already meet quality standards for the proposed reuse.

If it needs to be treated first, we use two main water treatment solutions:

  • Desalination – using reverse osmosis to separate dissolved salts from water
  • Amendment – altering the mineral balance and alkalinity of the water

After treatment, the water extracted during natural gas production is reused in our sustainable practices.

Brine (salty water) is produced as a by-product from desalination.

We carefully manage brine in accordance with legislation, for subsequent transfer to a licenced waste management facility as either brine or crystalised salt.
