Education for industry, students and landholders
We are playing our part in educating future generations about water management and monitoring.
For several years, we’ve been working with schools across the Maranoa region to give students first-hand experience in water monitoring. The high-school program introduces students to the concept of water management and monitoring, in particular the groundwater monitoring being undertaken by Santos GLNG.
The program involves members from our environmental monitoring team taking students into the field to conduct water monitoring at a number of sites in the Maranoa region. It provides an opportunity to teach students about the techniques behind the groundwater and surface monitoring that we undertake. Data collected by students is cross-checked with the Santos Water Portal.
We have established a water working group to ensure our knowledge is shared and all questions from the community are answered.
In 2011, we established a Water Working Group in Roma which meets to discuss and respond to community queries on water management. The group includes representatives from AgForce, Upper Dawson Wildlife Preservation Society, Queensland Murray-Darling Committee, Basin Sustainability Alliance, Queensland Great Artesian Basin Committee, other non-governmental organisations and local landholders.

In 2012 we began offering Maranoa landholders the opportunity to undertake a half day course in ‘Understanding Water Monitoring’. The course builds knowledge and understanding of our water monitoring program in the local community and helps landholders understand the data we make publicly available.
We are committed to keeping landholders and community members up to date on our business, and hold regular information sessions, open days and shed meetings, and are always available to work with the community on key issues, including water management. Overall, in 2014, we conducted more than 1,700 community and landholder meetings.
